The Societal Promise of 6G and Beyond: Toward a Human-Centric Digital Future

Abstract: As fifth-generation networks reach global maturity, research attention is turning to sixth-generation (6G) and beyond, expected to arrive commercially around 2030. Far more than a faster successor to 5G, 6G is envisioned as an AI-native, sensing-capable, and pervasively connected fabric that dissolves the boundary between the physical, digital, and human worlds. This abstract examines the transformative opportunities 6G and beyond offer to society, arguing that its greatest value lies not in raw throughput but in enabling applications that expand human capability, inclusion, and wellbeing. Terahertz communication, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, and network-embedded artificial intelligence together promise sub millisecond latency, near-ubiquitous coverage, and environmental awareness at unprecedented resolution. These capabilities unlock applications once confined to research: real-time holographic and immersive telepresence that reshapes remote work and education; precision digital-twin models of cities, factories, and even the human body that improve planning and preventive healthcare; and reliable connectivity for autonomous mobility, smart agriculture, and disaster response. Space–air–ground integrated networks, coupling non-terrestrial satellites with terrestrial infrastructure, offer a credible path to closing the global digital divide by extending affordable access to underserved and remote populations. Beyond individual use cases, 6G can advance societal priorities such as sustainability and resilience. Native AI orchestration and energy-aware design aim to improve spectral and energy efficiency, while dense sensing supports climate monitoring, smart grids, and efficient resource management. In healthcare, always-available high-fidelity links enable remote surgery, continuous patient monitoring, and personalized medicine at scale. Realizing these benefits responsibly will require attention to equitable access, energy footprint, privacy-preserving sensing, and inclusive standardization challenges best treated as design constraints rather than afterthoughts. This work concludes that 6G and beyond represent a generational opportunity to build networks that are not merely faster, but fundamentally more human-centric, sustainable, and inclusive, positioning connectivity as a foundational enabler of societal progress in the decade ahead.
